What isn’t there to love about this place?! Even the old building that’s home to the Chelsea Market has a story to tell. Oreo Cookies were not just produced in this place in the past, but also invented!
Imagine a world without Oreo Cookies… *shudders*. So this really is a fitting location for one of the most popular food spots in the city. You’ll find everything from bakeries, wineries, vegetable and fruit stands, fish restaurants and steak houses here, among so many other delicious food spots to satisfy your cravings.
The Meatpacking District is one of the more fancy areas of New York City. You are spoiled for choice in this part of the city, from the High Line and the several great rooftop bars, the restaurants and great shopping places, there is plenty to see and do.
But to me, the Chelsea Market still manages to stand out. Inside the old factory building, which spans a whole NYC block, you will find the perfect location to grab some food, even when the weather is acting up (which, let’s be honest here, can be the case in NYC).
Even during a freezing NYC winter you’ll be nice and warm in this paradise for food lovers. The old building has its charm and is the perfect location for an idyllic afternoon.
You’ll discover the beauty of the old granite structure, watch the bakers make a fresh batch of bread, or just find a seat in one of the little cozy restaurants.
The sheer variety of food and stores at Chelsea Market is stunning. Virtually everybody who takes a walk around inside will soon feel like trying some of the foods, the delicious smells coming from all directions makes it impossible not to.
You will definitely find a lot of things that will tickle your fancy. Meaning we recommend taking a long look around or peek at the map before you make a choice on where to eat. Or just be like me and hop from stand to stand.
Delicious cupcakes, fresh bread, fresh fish (also lobster, or Sushi), Italian delicacies, wine, and great coffee are only a few of the culinary highlights you’ll be enticed with.
If you are looking for a special souvenir, Chelsea Market has a lot to offer in that department as well. The Posman Books Store has tons of great postcards and little gifts to choose from. I always enjoy the vibe and overall atmosphere inside the food market. It’s part of what makes this place so special.
Apart from the mighty impressive bookstore, another big highlight is the indoor flea market Artists & Fleas. If you now go “Wait, I’ve heard that name before”, you’re absolutely right. There is another one in Williamsburg which you have likely heard of.
Artists & Fleas is an “Artists Fashion Design” and “Vintage” Market and a little paradise for all who love creative, authentic, unique clothes and accessories. For the most part it’s young artists and designers selling their products here.
You can almost taste (to keep in line with food market lingo) the creativity in this place when you take a stroll around. Keep in mind: Try and haggle a little. Most of the prices are negotiable and not set in stone.
Overall Chelsea Market is an absolute must-visit in Manhattan. The Chelsea Market in Meatpacking District is a special place and a journey into a different, creative world. I recommend you a visit in the early morning, or shortly before lunchtime.
During the weekends it is always very busy, which might bother you and might keep you from fully enjoying the charm and flair of the market. These are only our highlights of the market as well, there’s so much more for you to explore. But I guarantee you that there is something for everyone here.
