Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a city on the edge of Canada, extending into the Atlantic Ocean. Its historic architecture and contemporary buildings blend well to make any walk through the town a sightseeing delight.
Frankly, it was hard to curb my excitement when I learned I had been invited to stay four days at the Muir Halifax, Nova Scotia, part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Not only had it been a long stretch since I had been out of the United States, but now I was headed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, a spot popular with cruise ships.
While I took a circuitous route to Halifax from Palm Springs through Denver and Toronto, there is a more efficient way. Get yourself to New York City airports, then Halifax is a short flight.
PRO TIP: Halifax Stanfield International Airport is about 30 miles from downtown. Thus, you must rent a car or use Lyft, Uber, or a taxi.

I arrived at night, and when the driver pulled up in front of the Muir Hotel, the illuminated walls cast their shadows (I later learned they were actually lenses from lighthouses). It was beautiful and apparent it was located on the water’s edge. I noted two sets of double doors, and then it dawned on me that they were constructed to help keep out the intense winter cold.

As a single woman traveler, safety is a concern. Thus, I was pleased to see I had to use my keycard to operate the elevator. The signage was conspicuous, so there was no need to wonder if I was on the right path. The alcove where my room was located was lined with beautiful walnut paneling. Once at the door, I breathed a sigh of relief as the card key quickly opened to reveal my room. I was ready to unwind from a day of traveling.

Once inside my room, I noticed the stunning walnut bar off to the right. A large circular mirror graced the wall above it, and name-branded liquors sat on the marble top. I was curious, so I opened the first drawer to discover all the mixings for coffee and tea; thus, I was all set for my coffee at my early morning wake-up call after a good night’s sleep on my king-sized bed. Plus, I had a patio overlooking the harbor to sit and watch the city awake.

Open 24 hours a day, the fitness center is the perfect place to provide a space to continue your regular exercise program; thus, you have no excuse for “postponing” your routine.
Within the fitness center area, there is a meditation room. The hotel hopes to offer meditation sessions on the weekend. Even if they don’t, this is a place where you can get away from the crowds and do your yoga routine.

In the pool area, you can relax on lounge chairs surrounded by earthy colors and pillars made from local stone.
If you ever wanted to try a “cold plunge,” here is your chance. It is right by the sauna so it might be the ideal time. However, if you would rather not, you can get a workout in the large pool.

The Drift Restaurant, located to the left of the lobby, is a great place to begin or end your day. It offers room service, but it appears to be an excellent place to meet locals since I saw several business meetings.
A local dish, Hodge Podge, is a stew-like dish with root vegetables that gets a gourmet twist from the chef. I accompanied it with Boom at Noon, a cocktail created to honor the canon shot daily at the nearby Citadel.

Numerous restaurants are located at the base of the Muir complex on the water’s edge, each paying homage to Nova Scotia’s ethnic diversity.

The Public Gardens is considered one of the oldest Victorian gardens in North America. Easily accessible from the cruise ship dock and The Muir, this beautiful oasis is in the middle of this incredible city. On the way there, I passed by The Fairview Lawn Cemetery, which is the resting place for 121 victims of the Titanic.

If you have time and want to explore outside of Halifax, I recommend renting a car and heading west.
A journey to Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards allows you to experience the countryside and roam through organic and biodynamic vineyards. The co-owner, a sommelier, will help you pick up nuances about wine as he shares information about their small batches.
Nearby is Tangled Gardens. Here, you can wander through gardens of herbs and fruit trees. Beverly McClare will regale you with stories about the gardens and the products used to make her gourmet jellies and liquors.

Halifax is a beautiful city perched on the Atlantic Ocean’s edge, with people who are warm and diverse in their nationalities. After four days, I feel like I have only just begun to uncover the incredible history and attractions that I suggest should be added to anyone’s travel list.
